The most common mistakes when it comes to coffee: everything you need to know to avoid making errors in preparing the bittersweet nectar

“You see how little it takes to make a man happy: a cup calmly taken out here… with a friendly neighbor opposite…”

So said Eduardo De Filippo, portraying Pasquale in the famous play Questi Fantasmi (These Ghosts), concluding his monologue about coffee preparation. These few words summarize the essence of a ritual that exudes magic and satisfies the senses. This is exactly how coffee preparation is for those who truly love it: a sequence of a few but essential steps to be executed perfectly to avoid any mishaps.

Savoring a cup is a unique sensory experience that engages the sense of smell, taste, and even touch. De Filippo himself highlights the preciousness of the moment of preparation, a habit that he defines as the poetry of life and takes on an even more special value when it is for oneself.

The taste of the coffee is burnt or watery? Have you made any mistakes!

The anticipation begins even before the coffee is ready. Those minutes of eager waiting while the coffee is brewing may hold as much pleasure as actually tasting the prepared beverage. And if the taste buds are disappointed, all the excitement fades away. That’s why, for an experienced taster, it is important not to leave anything to chance, only to be disappointed when bringing the cup to the lips. Whether using a moka pot, coffee pod machines, or capsule machines, there are important details to pay attention to in order to avoid making a mistake that we wouldn’t forgive ourselves for while savoring the bittersweet nectar.

Mistakes to avoid when preparing coffee with a Moka pot

The Moka pot undoubtedly belongs to the elite of kitchen tools that everyone owns. It is a beloved and respected object that we can’t do without, even if there are trendier alternatives available. However, our trusted friend, the Moka pot, is not always infallible, and that also depends on us. There are several causes that can ruin the taste of coffee.

Let’s examine the most common ones:

1 The blend

You cannot achieve good coffee without a quality blend. This is an obvious truth that we should start with. However, even an excellent blend can be spoiled due to external factors. Given the coffee’s ability to absorb odors, it is crucial, for example, to store the blend in an airtight container, placed at a suitable distance from spices or other strongly aromatic products. Also, pay attention to the amount of coffee you pour into the filter. Here too, we have a recipe to follow for our Moka pot: for every 10 ml of water poured into the lower chamber, add 1 gram of ground coffee (even better if freshly ground). Be careful not to press it with a spoon.

2 Water

Often, tap water is used for coffee preparation. Yet, this can be a serious mistake that affects the taste of the beverage. Tap water may contain a high percentage of chlorine, which flattens all the aromatic substances in the drink. To obtain coffee with an authentic taste, use the water that you usually drink, brought to a boil beforehand. To prevent our coffee from becoming diluted, it is important that when pouring the water, it remains below the valve level.

3 Brewing time

As mentioned before, we begin to savor the coffee even before drinking it, as the aroma starts to intoxicate our senses. However, make sure that the flame is alive and consistent throughout the brewing process to reduce the extraction time and avoid burning the coffee due to high temperatures.

4 Moka pot conditions

Sometimes, we are so attached to our trusted Moka pot that we don’t want to part with it at any cost. However, be cautious of factors that could damage it and consequently ruin the taste of the coffee. First and foremost, keep an eye on the condition of the gasket: if it is worn out, it should be replaced immediately. Another fatal mistake that can be made is washing the Moka pot with detergent or in the dishwasher. This would alter the coffee’s flavor, affecting the aroma it absorbs with each use. It is always better to wash the Moka pot with hot water and, after four uses, use specific cleaning products, allowing the pot to soak for about fifteen minutes in a boiling mixture of water and detergent.

Coffee machines with pods and capsules, where you can go wrong and why

For those who use pods or capsules, life is not necessarily easier. Even in these cases, there is a risk of making mistakes that compromise the taste of the coffee. The reasons can vary. Here are the three main errors:

1 The raw material

Always pay attention to the quality of the blend contained in the pods or capsules. Also, make sure that the wrappers, whether cellulose or airtight, are suitable for your coffee machine.

2 Temperature

Before starting the coffee preparation process, once you’ve inserted the capsule or pod, make sure to allow the machine to heat up and reach the right temperature.

3 Machine maintenance

Limescale can be an enemy to the coffee machine’s reservoir. Pay attention to the water you use, and, above all, remember to empty and clean it frequently, using descaling agents. Also, extract the pod or capsule immediately after use, making sure never to leave it inside.

And there you have it, all the tricks for the perfect preparation. As you can see, it’s not that simple, but by following these tips, your coffee will always be great!
